It’s Been Three Years!

Today is my wife and I’s third wedding anniversary.

So today, I’m reflecting on the promises I made on August 8, 2014.

Instead of coming up with new stuff, I thought I would post my vows. I love reading back through them and remembering that day. It reminds me that I’m not alone in this world. I have an incredible teammate who is looking out for my best interests and I look out for hers. We’re in this thing together, trying to figure out life. When the road gets rough, we have each other.

It has been an incredible three years. I can’t wait for fifty-three.

My darling, my dear, my love, my best friend, I have prayed for this moment for years.  I have seen you and been with you in many different circumstances over a long period of time, every day.  I have seen the best and worst of you.  In the time that I’ve known you, I’ve grown to love and adore you in so many ways.  Three years ago, when we met, I had a hunch that you were somebody special, and rare, and that I would spend my life with you.  I remember telling friends about that hunch, and somehow it came true! After today our lives will look much differently.  Many things change for us today.  We won’t call each other every night; we’ll be able to say good night in person.  In a few minutes we’ll be able to kiss.  I’m just a little excited about that.  We’ll spend our lives together and share incredible memories.  But there will also be hard times and days that we don’t really like each other, and times we’d rather forget.  In all of these times, good or bad, we have today to remember, and the promises that we make here and now. I promise to love you with all of my heart for all of my life. I promise to hold your hand when we’re 80. I promise to take selfies with you, even when they aren’t cool anymore. I promise to sit on the same side of the booth with you. I promise that I will never stop picking your nose. I promise to value cuddling over getting stuff done. I promise to be your biggest fan, your cheerleader, and encourager. I promise to think more highly of you than anyone else could ever think of you. I promise to be faithful with my eyes, my heart, my mind and my body. I promise to help you chase your dreams. I believe in you and who God has called you to be and I promise to help you become just that. I promise to pray for you.  I promise to sacrifice. I promise to put myself in second place. I promise to repent and ask for forgiveness. I promise to forgive. I promise to really know you and to let you really know me. I promise to be vulnerable, even when I don’t want to be. I promise to be compassionate. I promise to serve you when I would rather be served. I promise to give you time, lots of time, and fight to protect that time. I promise to sit in silence and fill it with a knowing glance and a squeeze of the hand. I promise to be on your team when you feel alone and it’s you against the world. I promise to have your back when it feels like no one else does. I promise to kiss you and tell you that I love you every time I see you. I promise to be the hot to your dangerous. In all of these things, I am giving my life to you.  I am giving myself up for you.  I will not be perfect, but promise I will try with all of my might.  Your heart is the most beautiful thing I have found in all of my life.  I am thankful that God has given us to each other.  I love you.

Thank you April for everything. You make my life better. You make the world brighter!
